Hans J. Wegner’s CH24 Wishbone Chair: The Icon of Danish Modern Design

Born in 1949 and still impossibly modern, the Wishbone Chair is not just a seat—it’s a classic. A curve of wood, a woven paper cord seat, and a silhouette that feels light and inviting. With its poised arch of timber and Y-shaped backrest that supports rather than commands, it’s a piece that doesn’t demand attention yet always draws the eye.

Crafted With Care, Designed to Last

The CH24, or Wishbone Chair, was the first model Hans J. Wegner designed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949 and has remained in continuous production since its debut in 1950. Crafted through a meticulous process involving over 100 steps—most completed by hand—the chair reflects Wegner’s belief that furniture should be both beautiful and functional. Inspired by the graceful lines of traditional Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs, Wegner reimagined the form to create something more approachable: light, ergonomic, and suited for modern living.

With its gently curved top rail, slender legs, and distinctive Y-shaped backrest, the Wishbone Chair blends comfort, stability, and sculptural elegance. Its hand-woven seat, made from durable paper cord, complements the natural grain of solid wood options like oak or walnut, resulting in a piece that feels warm, timeless, and adaptable.

Thanks to its balanced proportions and understated design, the Wishbone Chair fits effortlessly into a wide range of interiors—offering a quiet sophistication that continues to define modern Danish design.

Timeless, But Not Fixed in Time

Perhaps what’s most beautiful about the Wishbone Chair is its adaptability. It slips effortlessly into different interiors: minimalist lofts, cozy cottages, coastal homes. It pairs as well with rustic tables as it does with clean-lined modernism. That versatility comes from its humble beauty—it doesn’t overpower; it elevates.

This is what makes the Wishbone Chair timeless. Not just because it has endured for over 70 years, but because it continues to feel relevant. It speaks to a slower kind of luxury, one rooted in materials, longevity, and human touch. It reminds us that good design isn’t just about how something looks—it’s about how it makes us feel, day after day.

In the end, the Wishbone Chair is more than an icon. It is sought after for its comfort and versatility. The design provides a natural fit in a wide range of interiors and its lasting appeal comes from a balance of simplicity and function.
