Spotlight On: Carl Hansen & Son

Based on the Danish island of Funen, the birthplace of legendary author Hans Christian Andersen, Carl Hansen & Søn is a family-owned furniture design company with a tradition spanning over a century.

A staple of Danish design, this Scandinavian company values craftsmanship above all else, which along with passion and creativity, has birthed an incredible portfolio of furniture adored across the world.

Through a partnership with Hans J. Wegner, one of the driving forces behind the new Danish Modern style, Carl Hansen & Søn created some of its most iconic pieces, including the Wishbone Chair.

In recent years, Carl Hansen & Søn embraced a sustainable and environmentally conscious philosophy and is working tirelessly to blend these efforts with beautiful design and functionality.

Timeless beauty, comfort, craftsmanship, and sustainability are so deeply ingrained in all our furniture works that only sight and touch are required to understand and fall in love with them.

– Knud Erik Hansen, CEO, and owner

Wishbone Chair

This best-selling item from 1949 became an instant classic of Danish design when it first appeared. Also known as the CH24 Chair, the Wishbone was designed by Hans J. Wegner within his first month of work for Carl Hansen & Søn and has been in continuous production ever since.

The inspiration behind the Wishbone were Ming dynasty chairs, evident in the original names for the series – China chairs.

The Wishbone is the product of a profoundly intricate manufacturing process, done mostly by hand, making this impressive piece the epitome of exquisite craftsmanship and dedication.

The chair is made from 14 different parts, while assembly requires 100 separate processes that take about three weeks. For example, each Wishbone chair has a completely hand-woven seat made from 4000 feet of paper cord.

Truly an incredible piece of modern design history, the Wishbone chair is also a prime example of the timeless quality of Danish design – a piece that stood the test of time and continues to remain a favorite 60 years after its inception.

Oculus Lounge Chair

Another piece from Hans J. Wegner, this stunning lounge chair was designed in 1960. However, production on the Oculus chair began half a century later based on the original drawings from Wegner.

The name is derived from the Latin word for eye and refers to the chair’s unique shape. An instantly recognizable masterpiece, the Oculus is also synonymous with comfort due to its extra deep seat.

The lightweight stainless steel base of the Oculus chair holds the upholstered, curved seat which features a round backrest. The Oculus is available at Rouse Home in three versions – black leather, gray wool, and a navy blue Kvadrat canvas (wool and nylon).

Popular in both office spaces and homes alike, this eye-catching piece is sure to take any room to the next level in terms of style.

Contour Chair

The Carl Hansen world of chairs contains many classics, all of which possess an exquisite design and are the result of incredible skill. No different is the Contour Chair, a piece designed by the Danish master Børge Mogensen in 1949.

The chair was later relaunched in 2019 and continues to entice design lovers. The Contour chair has a very distinct silhouette composed of a wooden frame, angled legs, and a curved seat. It is very light creation as has a cutout backrest, but the Contour still manages to be a durable piece.

Working on the Contour chair was a great challenge for Mogensen as he had previously designed solid wood furniture. His experiment with a new style paid off and the Contour is already being hailed as a future classic – an amazing feat of craftsmanship, passion and all the other qualities that have made the Danish school of design the cream of the crop.

Cuba Chair

The foldable Cuba Chair was designed by Morten Gøttler in 1997 to evoke balmy days on the tropical Caribbean island. This lounge chair is another fine piece representative of Danish quality, but also practicality as the Cuba Chair is a real space-saver.

The solid oak frame of the chair can be folded with one hand and discreetly placed in storage or hung on a wall.

The space-saving ability combined with the comfortable seat of the Cuba chair makes this piece another favorite of design-lovers, whether it is used as extra seating or as part of a permanent set-up.

Its clean design will make the Cuba Chair an elegant addition to any home, whatever the finish (soap oak, oiled oak or black oak), while longevity is guaranteed with a piece like this, as is the case with all of Carl Hansen’s furniture.

GamFratesi: A Study in the Beauty of Contrasts

Born out of a fusion of classic Danish tradition and Italian quality, furniture design studio GamFratesi was established in 2006. Founders Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi describe their approach to design as both traditional and experimental, with an aim to “create furniture that illustrates the process and the techniques that created it, and which reflect a persistent exploration of the diverse border zone between harmony and disharmony.”

The architectural duo split their time between their respective hometowns of Copenhagen and Pesaro, drawing inspiration from their travels and from the design traditions of both countries.

Contrasts are often the center of our inspiration. Both in work and daily life we are constantly confronted with contrasts, and we do work a lot with references and respect to traditions in both our cultures. We both have roots in strong design cultures. Studying, researching and moving constantly between our two countries, it has become such a natural part of us, that it will also show in our work,” the couple says.

Recipients of numerous design awards, GamFratesi’s exquisite projects range from stunning restaurant interiors to the famed Beetle Chair.

The iconic Beetle was inspired by the prominent insect, which is visible in the chair’s shape and structure. It was created for GUBI in 2013 and first presented at Milan’s annual Mindcraft exhibition.

A favorite at renowned restaurants around the world, the Beetle boasts a comfortable design and finish optionality, making it an excellent fit for a wide variety of interiors.

“We first found inspiration in the anatomy and aesthetic of the beetle. We reinterpret the beetle’s hard and characteristic shell and structure in a chair that, like an actual beetle, has a hard exterior and a soft interior. This insect has a very delicate form, but with an important functional aspect,” Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi said of the Beetle.

Take a journey through the truly captivating world of the gorgeous GamFratesi-designed interiors.

The Harlan & Holden Glasshouse at Rockwell (Manila)

Located in the hectic Philippine capital, the Harlan & Holden Glasshouse Cafe is a dreamy refuge of tropical allure right in front of one of Manila’s most popular shopping malls.

According to the designers themselves, the breathtaking design centers on “breaking the boundaries between indoor and outdoor” and showcases, among other pieces, the Beetle Bar Chair, available at Rouse Home in your choice of fabric and base finishes.

Mint-colored upholstery dominates this verdant design along with rattan furniture, a stone and terrazzo bar, and wood and stone tabletops.

Surrounded by the urban sprawl of Manila, this chic and elegant decor perfectly encapsulates the GamFratesi design philosophy.

Copenhague (Paris)

GamFratesi designed the interiors of the two restaurants located in The Danish House in Paris (Maison du Danemark) on the famed Champs-Élysées.

The fine-dining restaurant Copenhague is a luxurious, intense and sophisticated experience. Dark blue walls grace the interior of the Copenhague, paired with large mirrors and Greta Grossman’s Cobra Lamps designed for GUBI. Cobra Lamps can be found at Rouse Home.

Interspersed with white porcelain, the moody interior features Raf Simons Kvadrat textiles for the curtains and tablecloths and the Masculo Chair, offered in the fabric of your choice at Rouse Home.

Flora Danica (Paris)

The second restaurant in the Danish House is the quaint high-end brasserie Flora Danica. The custom furniture for Flora Danica was created in partnership with GUBI specifically for this eclectic restaurant that serves contemporary Danish dishes with a French twist.

Named after the comprehensive botanical atlas that documents Denmark’s plant life between 1761 and 1883, Flora Danica has the feel of a beautiful, lush orangery.

In contrast to Copenhague, the brasserie enjoys an abundance of natural light. Green and gray hues dominate the design that spreads across a marble floor, offset by the black and brass bases of the Beetle chairs in various textiles. The TS Table is prominently featured in the Danish restaurant as well.

The focal point of Flora Danica is the luxurious green marble bar lined with Beetle Bar Stools. The bar exuberant display is supplemented with a geometric floor.

A large wall display featuring Flora Danica drawings completes this perfect mixture of Art Deco and Nordic design, right in the heart of Paris.

Verandah (Copenhagen)

Housed in an iconic 1930’s building, Verandah was a river-view, contemporary Indian restaurant closed in 2016. As with other GamFratesi interiors, the space possessed a greenhouse feel to it, this time in a cool-toned palette of grays and blues.

The copper Orient pendants from Lightyears gave Verandah a rustic note, while the special edition Beetle Bar Chairs provided the now-closed venue with just the right touch of Danish elegance.

Among GamFratesi’s numerous impressive pieces, here is a selection of our most favorite works.

Space Copenhagen: Poetic Modernism Finds its Expression in Contemporary Danish Design

Hailing from Denmark, multidisciplinary design studio Space Copenhagen was established by Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou in 2005 with the idea of bringing together opposing concepts in a harmonious balance.

Both graduates of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, the duo cite Poetic Modernism when it comes to their approach to creating everything from interior design to art installations – all based on an insatiable curiosity and with a focus on quality and longevity. These core values made the Danish design powerhouse into one of the world’s most innovative and renowned, constantly pushing the boundaries, but always refined and with a touch of elegance.

Among other achievements, Space Copenhagen is responsible for the Nordic designs that grace the interior of the two-Michelin star gastronomic mecca that is Noma in the Danish capital.

Drawing on inspiration from various sources, these finely crafted pieces from natural materials, and with a muted color palette, evoke simplicity, functionality and a sense of timelessness. Still, the work of Space Copenhagen will easily convey a cozy atmosphere, both at home and in hospitality interiors.

Swoon Lounge Collection for Fredericia Furniture

Space Copenhagen’s Swoon Lounge collection for one of Denmark’s most renowned furniture brands, Fredericia Furniture, was originally designed for the 11 Howard Hotel in New York in 2016. This series features several armchairs and a complementary ottoman – all crafted for perfect comfort and casual elegance, making it one of our favorite collections by the Copenhagen-based duo.

With solid wood legs and upholstered in both leather or fabric, according to your personal preference, pieces in the Swoon Lounge collection come in six finishes of your choice – black lacquered, lacquered oak, smoked oiled oak, lacquered walnut, spa treated oak and oiled oak.

As a standalone piece, or an accompaniment to the armchair, Fredericia’s Swoon ottoman is the embodiment of the modern and simple Scandinavian style. This soft, upholstered ottoman exudes calmness and is the perfect addition to a stylish lounge set synonymous with feeling at home. The ottoman is available in three colors.

Gravity Lighting for Gubi

The Gravity collection by Space Copenhagen for Gubi, an icon of Danish design with an eclectic collection of furniture and lighting, represents the epitome of contrasts.

A juxtaposition of strength and fragility, the lamps in this collection are anchored with heavy marble bases ascending into subtle shades to create a piece of geometric elegance.

Ideal for tranquil evenings, this series consists of a table lamp and a floor lamp that produce delicate ambient lighting, both available in two shade colors and three different bases – gray marble, blackened steel and black marble.

High Stools for Mater Design

Space Copenhagen’s high stools for long-term collaborators Mater are minimalism at its finest. These versatile pieces boast a timeless design, making them the perfect fit for your dining room or kitchen space.

Sustainably produced with a base of solid FSC certified wood and topped with a smooth, leather seat, the stools come in six finishes – dark stained beech, black
stained beech, soaped oak, sirka gray stained oak, dark stained oak and black stained oak.

The Spine Collection for Fredericia Furniture

Offering a wide selection of chairs, stools and daybeds, the Fredericia Spine Collection features handcrafted pieces originally designed for a Michelin starred restaurant in 2011.

Simple lines and plush upholstering define this exquisite collection – a team effort with Space Copenhagen. Elegance meets functionality in the impeccably designed pieces that just urge relaxation.

Available in a wide array of colors, sizes and base finishes at Rouse Home, the Spine series is ideal for those seeking craftsmanship and refinement, as well as
maximum comfort.

Accent Series for Mater

Minimalism is the cornerstone of the Accent collection of tables designed by Space Copenhagen for environmentally friendly producer of high-end furniture and lighting Mater.

Featuring a side table, a larger oval lounge table, a cafe table and a round dining table all in solid FSC certified oak, pieces from this series will work beautifully in a wide array of interiors. At Rouse Home, you can find your favorite piece from this collection in two colors – beige and brown.

Stay Sofa for Gubi

Another gem from Gubi, the Stay Sofa designed by Space Copenhagen combines comfort with luxury for an end result that simply begs you to stay seated just a little while longer.

Crafted for relaxation, this plush sofa has an undeniably welcoming feel to it – bound to make it your favorite piece , no matter the room.

The Stay Sofa is suitable for both public and private spaces and is available in several fabrics, finishes and colors – ranging from the more vivid blue and green versions to the more muted toned cream, white, brown, beige and gray styles.

Danielle Siggerud: Designing The New Modern Classics

When designer and architect Danielle Siggerud begins working on a project, she sees beyond conventional boundaries. A case in point: Copenhagen’s Menu Space Café. While designing the venue in 2017, she intuited a need for seating that would enhance the Café’s inspired surroundings, so she created the Androgyne Side Table; this signature piece strikes a perfect balance between the masculine and the feminine and retains the modern aesthetic of the Menu brand. It’s a prime example of Siggerud’s style.

Though she leans toward minimalism, her design philosophy is decidedly expansive. “For me, architecture is about eliminating excess and focusing on essential forms,” Siggerud says. “It is about rigorous attention to details and carefully selecting the right materials. I want to create serene spaces that are soft and emotional, but also naturally afford human interaction.”

Siggerud’s unique vision extends far beyond commercial undertakings. Her list of residential projects is burgeoning – a result of her ingenuity and keen insights. “A home is very personal and, in the end, it’s the people inhabiting the space who make it what it is,” Siggerud explains. “My process for composing this framework is comprised of three clear steps. I refer to the first as ‘the body’, which is all about getting under the skin of my clients to understand who they are and how they live. I create spaces around the needs and personalities of my clients, embracing the circle of their daily life, so this part is absolutely essential. The next step is ‘the building’, which you could compare to an archeological field survey. I consider the history and heritage of the place in question and its context. The final phase, ‘the skin’, is about selecting materials in a precise and sensual way. I believe that these materials can assume a poetic quality in an architectural context.”

The breadth and scope of Siggerud’s portfolio emphasize versatility. In fact, one of her professional trademarks is the seamless blending of design and nature. “When I go for walks in the city, or when I travel,” Siggerud says, “I always look up at the buildings and find inspiration for current or future projects.”

In the water-bound Copenhagen neighborhood of Holmen stands a restored townhouse that bears the Siggerud stamp: a combination of rough beams and smooth stone surfaces, a pallet of neutral colors, and careful detailing. The home is rugged but elegant, reflecting Siggerud’s ability to functionalize a space without diminishing its existing architectural elements.

“Staying true to the building is my greatest responsibility,” Siggerud says. “I always have in mind that the work I do is in the service of its community.”

Siggerud opened her eponymous studio in 2016, and her boundary-defying design can also be found outside of Denmark. She is currently working on projects in Spain, France, and Norway.

GamFratesi: A Beetle’s Story

Heavily influenced by a combination of Scandinavian and Italian design, GamFratesi was founded by Danish architect Stine Gam and Italian architect Enrico Frates. While their two styles and cultures are juxtaposing, Gam and Frates found a unique way to compliment one another’s distinct backgrounds and fuse two entirely separate blends of tradition and modernity.

GamFratesi aims to design furniture which reflects the meticulous process required to create their exquisite pieces. One of their most iconic pieces, the Beetle Chair, was patently inspired by the body and structural build of a beetle. The insect’s hard, durable shell and soft interior inspired the designers to create something with the same bold exterior yet comfortable feeling. Since the release of this famous piece, the Beetle Chair has found its way into many homes, offices, and restaurants all over the world. As a multidisciplinary brand, the designers understand the importance of looking beyond the surface and communicating traces of meaning in their pieces. Together they create functional furniture enhanced by their own distinct narrative: “We believe that good design is not just a solution of the primary so-called pure functional problems, but creation of the message, that fills objects and concepts with cultural, philosophic, aesthetic and poetic content.”

Hammer Museum’s New L.A. Restaurant Serves Up Some Serious Style

With a $180 million renovation well underway, it’s no surprise that the Los Angeles–based Hammer Museum at UCLA would add a glittery new restaurant to its offerings. Audrey at the Hammer feels like a natural extension of the museum, thanks to renowned architect Michael Maltzan, the man also responsible for the museum’s upgraded new look, which includes an additional 40,000 square feet of space. Maltzan’s deep L.A. roots and work within the urban sector made him a shoo-in for the project.

Named after Hammer board member Audrey Irmas, Audrey’s mid-century modern aesthetic created by Tom Parker of Fettle Interior Design Studio is the perfect complement to the museum’s bright-white, MOMA-esque look. The 115-seat eatery’s indoor-outdoor flow—achieved by a bi-folding window that opens into the courtyard—make it feel very L.A. But Parker’s real genius lies in the expansive 30-foot-long bar he devised to evoke a connected and cohesive feel.

Parker, who’s known for his work balancing design and function within the hospitality industry, handpicked the upholstery and furnishings to add a touch of softness to the space. On the inside, curved banquettes create a textural contrast with a mix of mohair and leather. But it’s the orange-velvet Gubi Beetle Chairs that add the fun factor, inviting guests to come, dine and play for a while. The standout outside? The set of Chinese elm trees enveloped by olive-green cushioned banquettes.

Cuban-American artist Jorge Pardo’s tile installation and suspended lantern set prove that it’s all in the details. It’s clear that the lighting, which was originally commissioned by the Hammer for a gala back in 2011, has found a suitable new home at Audrey.

Impeccable restaurant design needs an equally impeccable menu, and Audrey, the brainchild of New York City–pedigreed restaurateur Soa Davis Forrest (of Le Bernardin fame) and chef Lisa Giffen (from the acclaimed Daniel, Blue Hill, Maison Premiere and Sauvage Foodies), doesn’t disappoint.

Statement Making Dining Room Lighting

Whether you want to set a specific mood or enhance the size of a dining room, it’s all about lighting. Warmth, serenity, beauty — nearly every goal of interior design relies on the right amount of illumination. When lighting is done well, a dark entryway becomes a welcoming passage, and a cramped workspace transforms into a nook for creativity. But finding a good glow is as much about style as it is functionality. Does your perfect dining room tell a bold story? Is that dream kitchen a mix of cozy and chic? Both color and furniture are accentuated by light. It can be a table or floor lamp, a sconce or an ornate chandelier. Whatever your objective, remember that lighting should make a statement.

Tom Dixon Melt Pendant

Bold and evocative, these pendants are designed to uniquely enhance their environment. They are reminiscent of molten glass, the half-mirrored effect providing a kind of two-fold beauty: when off, the finish creates a reflective surface; turned on, they emit a translucent glow. Expertly crafted through the process of blow molding, the imperfect, spherical orbs cast a luminosity that is both ethereal and natural.

Gubi Turbo Pendant

An example of design at its most innovative, the Gubi Turbo Pendant was inspired by the Japanese rice paper lamp. But don’t be fooled by its airy appearance: constructed from aluminum spiral lamellae, the Turbo is a highly durable piece. Its outer curve encircles the bulb like a swirled globe, and the effect is striking. Though pure in form, the Turbo’s sculptural composition will heighten the beauty of any space.

Gubi Multi-Lite Pendant

Created for versatility, the Gubi Multi Lite Pendant is as functional as it is iconic. Its two mobile shades can be independently rotated, changing both the direction of light and the actual look of the pendant itself. Upwards, downwards, asymmetrically – this ingenious fixture has multiple combinations. A true expression of Danish modern design, the Gubi lends a timeless, cutting-edge vibe to any room.

Alex Allen Studio Chord Cluster Chandelier

The Chord Cluster is a modern reinterpretation of a familiar form. The elegant semi-circular shapes are reminiscent of the swagging curves of a traditional crystal chandelier. Like its counterparts, Chord and Chord Convoy, the soft glow of light is emphasized by this geometry. It’s the perfect centerpiece for your dining room table.

Iacoli & McAllister Revati 9 Piece Chandelier

Constructed of brass-plated steel, the Revati chandelier is a prominent showpiece. Its round canopy and hang-straight hardware exemplify modern sophistication and a refined form. Its multiple lines suggest volume, but this piece is highly functional. As bright as the celestial point it is named for – revati refers to a star on the edge of the Pisces zodiac constellation – this chandelier is lighting at its most inventive.

Foscarini Big Bang Pendant

Chaos and geometric shapes, the Big Bang suspension lamp is a model that will not go unnoticed: an explosion of criss-crossing forms which create an architecture of surfaces, lights and shadows, with a strong architectural and scenic effect. Playing the starring role in any setting, in the L and XL variants, it is ideal for more significant settings as well.

Tom Dixon Copper Round Pendant

A beautiful, warm radiance is the hallmark of this pendant. A proportioned spotlight, it is constructed with copper, and its reflective surface instantly catches the eye. The spherical shape is simple, but its effect is gloriously complex. It is rare to find this level of luminosity. Born from the designer’s fascination with the high-tech process of vacuum metallization, this stunning piece is perfect as a centerpiece or an accent.
